Why is there a cloud symbol next to my files when the symbol should not be there?

There have been previous discussions on this subject. Maybe it is answered somewhere but the answer I read so far was not applicable to my situation. The reason given was: "A cloud by itself just means that the item is only in iCloud, so if you were to disconnect from Wifi and go to your iCloud Drive folder, you would not be able to open any items with a plain cloud next to them"

My file definitely is available offline on my local drive, and it is also available in the icloud.

To me it seems that it is bug related. I have a completely new laptop pro, I have a 2 TB subscription to icloud of which 1.3 TB is free, and I saved a perfectly legal catalog file on my local drive.

Thanks for considering this issue.

Regards.

Hello there and thanks,

Unfortunately the reply is in the line of answers in the past, it doesn't address my question.

I know files are sometimes stored locally, also the icloud folder files.

That is exactly why I check the browser icloud versus my local documents folder.

The files are exactly the same.

But next to the files is a cloud icon which should not be there.

That was my question.

regards Bart

Hello Daramb,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you need some help with iCloud Drive. We will be happy to assist you.

You may be able to open iCloud Drive files from your devices as they are sometimes stored locally. However, the changes to these documents would not update until you connected to the Internet.

Hi Luizfr,

No, they did not mention the bug, maybe not aware of it. I mailed the link you provided directly to my support line.

I am also running monterey on an M1 btw.

They have escalated my case to an engineering case to get to the bottem (with acces to those folders) I have also shared a screen video with what is happening so they can see.

The system works in practicallity, no problems there, it is only that it doesn’t show what it is supposed to show as icons.

These icons present awareness of synced status, so with this bug you loose trust in the system because you are not alerted to a waiting upload etc. That is why I think it is best to get to the bottem.

In the mean time I “fixed” one folder by copying it to another folder, which synced fine without a remaining greyed out cloud.

But that is a workaround which should not be necessary (although it proved the files are not corrupt etc)

KYP when I get news, should be a few days acc. apple support

Regards Bart

Hi Daramb,

Thank you so much for sharing your information. The temporary solution I found is the same as the one you are using: I open a new folder, move the files from the old folder to the new folder, and then delete the old folder. I would greatly appreciate it if you share your support feedback when they return to you. This problem has been occurring since the beginning of the year and it slows down the productivity in my work.

Regards

Luiz
