iMac HD fills up my MacBook Pro, trying to figure out some options

I have iCloud but when my iPhone, iMac, and MacBook all sync the MacBook (oldest of the lot 2019), gets full. I love the syncing functionality that I can access my iMac files when I'm not at home but it seems like you're a slave to the weakest link here e.g. the device that has the smallest HD space. Is there any way to tell the MacBook to only sync certain things? I'm no pro at this so I could just be missing something simple. Thanx
