Hotspot auto-(re)join behavior on MBP

Is there any clever way to get MacOS to auto-(re)join my iPhone's hotspot? An older thread explores the topic briefly (How can I get my MacBook to AUTOMATICALLY… - Apple Community) but does not ultimately resolve the question.

For context, my iPad jumps on my iPhone hotspot almost too easily—like while simply reading a PDF outdoors, I notice it has joined and started downloading e-mails or whatnot—while my MacBook must be told to do so manually. Every. Single. Time. This would not be that bad, were it not for the fact that every time the MacBook sleeps, it disconnects; and every time I wake it, I must manually rejoin.

Some possible workarounds I've tentatively eliminated:

  1. Keeping the Mac awake. My general use case is to charge overnight and work on battery. The MBP battery lasts all day (thanks Apple!), provided my power settings are not perverse, but I am not aware of any way to forestall sleep without keeping the display running, making battery life tedious. (Older versions of MacOS had separate display and system sleep settings, if memory serves—no more.)
  2. USB connection to iPhone. Data tethering seems to use quite a bit of phone battery, so I carry a light charger for the phone; however, if it is connected to the MBP, the laptop battery will supply the power instead, forcing me to carry a heavier laptop charger instead.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

tl;dr Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it does not work in the way you, I, or any normal person would expect.

You might think that tick box would help, but you would be sadly mistaken. I have experimented with that setting more than I care to remember, and if you dig around some of the older threads that touch on this, it seems that this setting is ignored for iPhone hotspots, even while doing exactly what you would expect for regular infrastructure Wi-Fi networks. On the other hand, that setting (incidentally synced via iCloud to all my devices) does control the iPad behavior.

I have enabled the the auto-join option for that Wi-Fi network on your Mac?

If you go into you wifi settings and click on "Advanced" the fist tab is called "Wi-Fi" and it lists all known networks you have joined. There is a tick box to enable "Auto-Join" per network.

I haven't tried this myself, so I don't if it will work, but there is a setting for it, so I guess it should.
