"Paste item" missing from finder's right click menu

Hi,

Just bought a new MBP (M1 silicon) and tried for the 1st time MacOS Monterey.

I found out that the "Paste item" does not appear in the right click menu in finder. See attached screenshots:

In Catalina, this option is available (highlighted in red).

But in Monterey, "Paste Item" is missing.

Note: this happens in list view and only if I am at the top level folder (on computer's name in "Locations" in the left panel). If I go inside a folder, the option is back. Is it a bug or am I missing something?

As very correctly mentioned by contributor @Luis S the Top Level of the computer is housed in a Separate Volume Sealed and Read Only Volume on this computer.

It can not be opened by the User ( you or I ) and / or Third Party " Bad Actor " Software to modify, remove or otherwise have any director or indirect access to this Volume.

This is by Apple Design in Big Sur and Monterey

The only Entity that can alter this volume is Apple and usually only happens during an update or Upgrade.

Hi, in macOS Monterey, when you copied the file, you need to right-click on a blank space in the finder to see the paste button(don't right-click on another file). The paste button is beneath the "New Folder" button.

Moreover, a more convenient way of copying and pasting files: select the file you want to copy and command+c, then paste it by command+v(just like copying and pasting text).

Thanks! I now understand why I cannot paste any file there.

However, I still find weird that this very same thing was possible in Catalina but not anymore in Monterey.

To add more details to the story, I do not try to paste a file at the top level. It may not be clear on the screen capture but I'm just trying to paste a file inside a folder located in one disk partition. If I double click on this folder to go inside it, I can then paste the file.

It makes sense that pasting a file on the top level folder should not be possible. But I still think that this does not make sense to prohibit to paste a file inside any folder.

For info, if I use the "Go to folder" in Finder's menu to go to "/Volumes", I end up in the very same location but this time with the paste option available in the right click menu. Not very logical, isn't it?

I have set up this location as the default location for new finder's windows. I'll deal with this workaround from now on.

Sorry but in Monterey in Mac Mini M1 running Monterey 12.4 the are No Additional Partitions on the drive beyond the below copy and Paste from Terminal.

There are Volumes and No Partitions - unless the user has pre-partitioned the internal drive otherwise

So where is the Partition appearing ?
