How do I take a screenshot with Monterey on a 13" MacBook Pro?

Press cmnd+shift+5. Then in the Screenshot menu bar that appears click on Options, and then make sure Mail is not selected as the default location for screen shots.

I use Preview, so I can edit the screen shot and then save it anywhere I need to.

You can return to using cmnd+shift+4 once you change the default to option to something else and it will continue to use that selection in the other modes.
