Image Capture app cannot open iPhone

I connected my iPhone 11 Pro (IOS 15.5) to my MacBook M1 Air (macOS Monterey 12.4) and Finder asked me if it's a trusted device, to which I replied "yes" and my iPhone appeared in Finder. All good so far.

On my MacBook I opened Image Capture to get iPhone Photos into a MacBook folder and got this message "Could not open a connection to the device module" and a lock symbol alongside my iPhone in the left Device pane. My iPhone was unlocked.

Why? How do I use Image Capture to get my iPhone's photos?

For what it's worth, this works fine when I try this here. I took screenshots of a few messages which were then stored in Photos.

A lock initially appeared next to my iPhone, but as soon as I clicked on the iPhone, the image capture display opened up quickly with my 2 test shots.
