iMessage Mentions won’t work for me

hi! can anyone help me? i have an iPhone 13 Pro, and my iOS is completely up to date. Every time i go to mention someone within iMessage or a group conversation where everyone has an iPhone, my mentions do not work! i type the “@“ symbol and i type out their name exactly how it is in my contacts, and it just won’t work.
