Recording sync Issues after Upgrading from i7 to M1

  • Recently upgraded from a mid-2014 15" Retina MBP i7 to a 16" MBP with M1 Pro.
  • OS went from Catalina (10.15) to Monterey (12.4).
  • Running latest Logic Pro X (10.7.4) in native mode
  • Audio Interface: Allen & Heath QU-32 Digital Mixer over USB v1.97 firmware

I've been running my setup for about 8 years now and it's been flawless with the old laptop. After upgrading to the new laptop, OS, and Logic, my old project plays back perfectly but when I record, the recording is not in sync with the rest of the tracks. I've never had this issue before. Logic always handled this kind of basic syncing ever since I started using it back in 2007, but now it's like it's not compensating anymore. Everything else otherwise performs flawlessly.

  • Plugin latency compensation is set to 'ALL'
  • Buffer is 128
  • Resulting latency is 11.7ms roundtrip, 5.6ms out
  • Recording delay is 0 seconds
  • Project sample rate is 48Khz (mixer native)
  • Works fine when I switch to older i7 MBP (Catalina)
  • Mixer connected directly to USB-C port via adapter or via USB-C to USB-A Hub. No difference either way.
  • Tried a number of reboots and reinitialization steps but no difference.

My project has a Drummer track and three audio tracks. There aren't many plugins in use. When I record a lead guitar part, the project plays back through my mixer via stereo output (channels 1 and 2). My guitar FX board connects stereo XLR into the mixer on channels 3 & 4. I monitor the guitar directly from the mixer rather than input monitoring from Logic so I get <1ms latency. After recording, playback should sound exactly the same as when I was recording. On my old laptop, this setup works fine and Logic adjusts the recording to account for any playback delay. On the M1 Pro, it doesn't and appears to be off around 30 ticks or so, but it could be variable.

At first I thought I was playing really bad, but I'm actually pretty ok. Honestly. I did a test recording in Logic while doing a parallel recording on my phone and the phone recording has me playing perfectly in time, while the logic recording is off to an embarassing degree.

Is this a known issue with any of the upgrades I've made? Having to micro realign every take is a real productivity killer and it's never quite right. As it stands I can't record on my shiny new laptop.

Thanks

Before following the procedure below. Try recording with Low Latency mode enabled on recording, and off on playback.

If that fails try the following:

Upper left Logic pro menu Preferences/Reset All Preferences Except Key Commands. Reboot machine, boot Logic, reset Preferences to your previous settings Except for these in Preferences/Audio....set process buffer range to Low, set Multithreading to "Playback Tracks".

Thank you. I tried low latency mode to no effect.

I then deleted preferences via logic, deleted all logic folders under /Library and ~/Library sub-folders, cleared out some old audio plugin files, preferences, and cache, deleted Logic, rebooted, reinstalled, downloaded extra content, rebooted, and tried recording with and without your suggested settings.

Sadly, the issue persists--and I'm only using the internal mic and speakers; nothing else in the chain to cause issues.

Next, I took myself out of the test by recording the sound of the logic metronome coming from the speakers. The audio region should show the metronome impulses right on the beat, but they're offset just like my previous tests (80-100 ticks). I tried with different buffer sizes too. No real difference.

One last observation. If I arm a track to record or enable track monitoring and then clap, the meter exhibits the same delay I see in my recordings. In my prior experience, metering of mic inputs has always been near instantaneous.

This has got to be just my system, right? There's no way something this fundamental could pass software testing.

Hi, Polarity-1. I ran your test and observed the same recording offset. In my case around ~80 ticks.

I then checked the "software monitoring" option, which I found in the main logic preferences > Audio tab--I couldn't find it under project preferences. But here's the weird thing. that checkbox is disabled. I can't check or uncheck it. What on earth does that mean?

Fingers crossed Monterey 12.5 sorts the problem for you.

I am now on Monterey 12.4 and have no such problems, however I am on a 2015 intel Macbook Pro,

I still think, whilst you are waiting for the OS update, which may be some time, and may not even fix your problem, I would download a copy of a free version completely different non-Apple DAW, just to see if the problem is still there, Studio One maybe. There are reports of problems with Logic/M1/Monterey, though I know of many people using Pro Tools on M1 computers without your issues.

At least you still have your 2014 MBP!

When using your audio interface if the offset is always consistent, you might go ahead and use the recording Delay adjustment and get it set to as close to zero offset as possible. I've use Logic since 2.5, a MIDI only version, the Recording Delay was originally used in conjunction with the analog loop-back test to correct sloppy audio drivers which didn't correctly report their latency to the audio system.

Thanks. Yes, I tried at all sample rates (44.1 thru 192KHz) with no change in delay.

For my latest tests, I used no plugins at all.

  1. Open Logic
  2. Create new blank project (no template)
  3. Add an audio track
  4. Enable metronome
  5. Mute and arm audio track
  6. Record a few measures (mic records metronome sound from speakers)
  7. Observe recording alignment

But I probably do still have some older plugins installed that aren't native M1. I tried clearing out most of them this morning, like some old Waves plugins and others. A few still appear in the plugin manager and are disabled.

It's a confounding issue for sure. I've been doing multitrack recording since the late 90's, using DAWs like Sound Forge and Acid Pro on budget PCs, and I've never had this issue.

...and the whole point of the metronome is to keep your recordings aligned to the beat. How is such a fundamental feature broken on Apple's Hardware, running Apple's OS, using Apple's DAW? Guess the best I can do is adjust the recording delay until they fix it.
