Power off dialog random appearance on power button press

When waking up my MBA M1 using the power button, every once in a while a power-off dialog (attached below) appears. I wonder if I can manually trigger that dialog somehow with my Mac, because I've tried pressing the power button with different methods to no avail.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.4

Also pressing any key on the keyboard will wake up the Apple USB-C laptops these days. Horrid feature in my opinion as it makes cleaning the keyboard difficult since there is no way to disable the feature, but it will wake the laptop up just as easily.

Chances are when pressing the power/TouchID button it is likely getting triggered twice -- once for waking up and the second trigger is making it think you trying to power off the laptop since the laptop is awake by then (or sort of awake).

Either the laptop thinks the button is being pressed twice, or maybe your laptop is not really asleep when you go to press the button to wake the laptop. Pressing the power button on a running awake laptop will cause the pop-up window. You can also get this window by manually clicking the Apple menu and selecting "Restart", "Shutdown", "Logout".

Are you saying you want or don't want this pop-up? These are the conditions when it will appear and AFAIK is not configurable. This pop-up occurs when you are about to change the state of the laptop to any mode but wake or sleep to allow you to confirm that you really want to interrupt your work to restart, shutdown, or logout the laptop.

Q - " When waking up my MBA M1 using the power button "

A - Have the same machine running Monterey 12.4.

When I put it to Sleep Mode, I just chose the Lid and leave it alone.

The moment I open the Lid and depending on how long it was in Sleep Mode, the Screen appears with either the Log In Screen or the Normal already loaded in Desktop.

No need to use the Power Button in this setup is not required at all.

Hello AufarR,

Thanks for asking us about your Mac.

Without knowing the steps you take, Mac Model, or what occurs while it's asleep, it's hard to guess. But, please make sure you are putting it to sleep per the article here: Mac Keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support

  • "Power button: Press to turn on your Mac or wake it from sleep. Press and hold for 1.5 seconds to put your Mac to sleep.* Continue holding to force your Mac to turn off.
  • * Does not apply to the Touch ID sensor."

Notice, this doesn't work on the Touch ID Mac models.

Instead, use the Apple > Sleep to sleep your Mac: Put your Mac to sleep or wake it - Apple Support

Thanks.
