Issues uploading to Vimeo (Your system has run out of application memory??)

Apologies. I know this is not the perfect forum to be asking this question, but I suspect that someone here has come across this before and might be able to steer me straight.

I'm uploading a 40 GB movie (H264 created by Compressor from a master ProRes HQ created by FCPX) to Vimeo using Safari. I've tried at least 8 times without success. These are 14 hour uploads that stall and die. The last couple of times I've received these pop ups - see attached screenshots. Several weeks ago I successfully uploaded an earlier version of this movie (on the 2nd try). Now I can't get the uploads to complete. I've never had this issue before. Does this ring a bell for anyone? My computer is a 2019 MacBook Pro with 64 GB memory and an 8TB SSD hard drive with 2.19TB of clear space on it. I'm using the last version of Big Sur.

All ears, Ben

Preference Pane: ~/Library/PreferencePanes/Perian.prefPane

Perian has not worked in years, and should not be used.

Open System Preferences, control-click on Perian and choose Delete.

And you have those NASTY things.

[Loaded] com.google.keystone.daemon.plist (Google LLC - installed 2022-06-01)

[Loaded] com.google.keystone.agent.plist (Google LLC - installed 2022-06-01)

[Loaded] com.google.keystone.xpcservice.plist (Google LLC - installed 2022-06-01)

[Running] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac4.Updater.plist (MacPaw Inc. - installed 2020-05-20)

Chrome and its keystone things are sworn enemies of video applications, and of general performance in your mac.

Cleanmymac... let's just say that the catchphrase for it is "cleanmymac claims another victim".

Completely uninstall Cleanmymac, following their instructions. It is NOT enough to drag the application to the trash.

See https://chromeisbad.com for an explanation of what the keystone thingies do, and how to completely uninstall.

Then restart your mac, and post a new Etrecheck report.

There are many things installed, probably some of them have been there for years - how else would Perian be there?

There's probably something else involved not just the open applications specifically. That said, is there any reason to keep any of the applications open while running the process. I understand it probably hinders your productivity, but perhaps no more than having to run the uploads multiple times.

I believe Vimeo has a watch folder app in the App Store that will upload file to their servers. So if it can afford to shut down the other applications it would be helpful.

The ErtreCheck Report might well point to some other issue that's a more primary cause of the problem than the applications themselves.

I totally concur with Ian and Luis. Following are instructions which I believe Luis posted a while back on doing a clean install.

1) Make a full backup, preferably two: a Time Machine, and a full bootable clone, on a separate drive. You can use the free version of SuperDuper! to make this clone, or perhaps Carbon Copy Cloner.

NOTE: it is important to have more than one backup, since you're about to erase the main drive

2) Erase and install. I advise you to create an installer on a usb stick, to avoid having to install over the internet (slow).

Instructions here: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support  How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

NOTE: to erase, start from the usb installer disk, choose Disk Utility and erase the whole internal drive (not just the volumes inside); choose APFS with GUID Partition Map.

4) Quit Disk Utility and start the installation on the now empty drive

5) When asked if you want to transfer information, choose "From another mac, disk or Time Machine backup", and select the backup you made in step 1.

IMPORTANT: Migrate **ONLY** the user accounts (NOT applications, NOT settings, or other files)

6) Install any applications you really need, from the App Store or the respective developers' sites.

If your problem is caused by an accumulation of crud, updating, upgrading or reinstalling the OS will only add further problems to it.

The only solution is a complete erasure of your hard drive and a clean install of the OS. Your computer will then be in the same condition as the day it left the factory.

It's not as big a deal as you may imagine and will probably be quicker in the long run than all the procrastination you are undergoing at present. In fact you could have done it several times over in the time you have been discussing your problems.

The basic reinstallation should only take an hour or so and you don't need to reinstall every app. Just install the ones you require and do the others as and when the need arises.

Needless to say, backup everything of importance before you start erasing the drive.

I'm now trying an Etrecheck, which I haven't done before ... so learning curve. But if Etrecheck requires me to run the upload until failure before it can 'check' ... these uploads are running fine for 12 hours before they crash and burn.

I'm going to upload a 2 minute film right now. I've been uploading films to Vimeo all winter, scores of films, no issues. This is a new phenomenon.

Will do the Etrecheck.

The last upload I tried all other apps were closed but one (the audio interface I think). Will check the Vimeo app in the App Store. The exhausting thing is that I think it has something to do with the large size of the file ... and like I said to Luis ... to be able to do tests to failure mode, each time it's taking 12 hours to get to the failure.

Will report back...
