Issues uploading to Vimeo (Your system has run out of application memory??)

Apologies. I know this is not the perfect forum to be asking this question, but I suspect that someone here has come across this before and might be able to steer me straight.

I'm uploading a 40 GB movie (H264 created by Compressor from a master ProRes HQ created by FCPX) to Vimeo using Safari. I've tried at least 8 times without success. These are 14 hour uploads that stall and die. The last couple of times I've received these pop ups - see attached screenshots. Several weeks ago I successfully uploaded an earlier version of this movie (on the 2nd try). Now I can't get the uploads to complete. I've never had this issue before. Does this ring a bell for anyone? My computer is a 2019 MacBook Pro with 64 GB memory and an 8TB SSD hard drive with 2.19TB of clear space on it. I'm using the last version of Big Sur.

All ears, Ben

Preference Pane: ~/Library/PreferencePanes/MouseLocator.prefPane

Preference Pane: ~/Library/PreferencePanes/Perian.prefPane

Perian has not worked in years, and should not be used.

Open System Preferences, control-click on Perian and choose Delete.

And you have those NASTY things.

Chrome and its keystone things are sworn enemies of video applications, and of general performance in your mac.

Cleanmymac... let's just say that the catchphrase for it is "cleanmymac claims another victim".

Completely uninstall Cleanmymac, following their instructions. It is NOT enough to drag the application to the trash.

See https://chromeisbad.com for an explanation of what the keystone thingies do, and how to completely uninstall.

Then restart your mac, and post a new Etrecheck report.

There are many things installed, probably some of them have been there for years - how else would Perian be there?

Awwww. I've been grinding away with FCPX since at least the last update, no issues at all, smooth as glass. Though ... Hey Luis, I wonder: FCPX has been doing everything it is supposed to do. This film is 4K. I've been remixing the audio for the last two weeks. There are a fair number of effects in certain clips. So I was assuming the jagged playback was just the computer having to process all the effects, and in 4K, but I'm wondering if any of that jaggedness could have been caused by outside circumstances? As you are suggesting?

Naah. And I confess I've been editing in 4K, and mixing in 4K, not creating a Proxy alternative. Which, after the fact, I should have. Have you ever edited 4K, with some effects, and had it running nice and smoothly? Maybe I've been short changing myself out of ignorance.

It's both Ian. Half the film was shot prior to affordable 4K. The other half in 4K -- can't remember the bitrate, but it was comparable to ProRes HQ. It's not a high-octane film, but it's nicely shot. I've done a fair amount of processing of the HD footage to make it cleaner, and a better match for the 4K. I don't want to lose this. We're using Vimeo as the platform for our applications to various festivals around the planet. Want to show the best face possible.

Cher Tom,

I'd like to, but the thought of re-installing all those apps, mind-boggling. I took Luis' suggestion and went in and deleted a bunch of useless files (Chrome, CleanMyMac) ... which I'd deliberately un-installed a year ago, but obviously didn't. I ran EtreCheck a few more times and used it (carefully) to delete a few more useless files.

What if I upgrade my operating system from Big Sur to Monterey? Might that help clean things up a bit?

Or, can't I in the migration process choose to delete some of the apps, like DiskWarrior? DiskWarrior has saved my bacon a bunch of times, it's no longer functioning?

And if I do that, is Monterey now stable and going to be smooth and manageable with FCPX, Compressor, Logic? Or am I asking for trouble? I read, six months ago, that Monterey was really poky, and with issues (as are all new upgrades and developing systems), and it wasn't time to upgrade yet. But maybe it now is?

FCPX is doing everything I need it to right now. Might re-installing Big-Sur help with some of the chaff?

EtreCheck has a more elaborate function that analyses issues and makes suggestions for how they can be corrected, it's a paid bump up. Have you heard if it's reliable and effective? Maybe I could use the EtreCheck system to dump some of that crap myself?

Jul 5, 2022 6:16 PM in response to Tom Wolsky

Aha! Big question. I was nervous about giving Full Disk Access. Is that safe to do? And I'm not sure if you answered the other question ... is it worth it (and safe) to use EtreCheck's more elaborate setup to suss out and repair 'chaff'? I'm game. I just don't want to do another 'cleanmymac' gaff. That was horrible. Dumbest move I ever made. Amazing how an app can look so slick and polished ... and be so horrendously dumb and dangerous.

That would be most wonderful. I've got some morning meetings. Then I'm going to attempt to do an EtreCheck and take their advice, THEN do a report and post it here ... to see there has been an improvement. I'll add the original report I did, when Luis and Tom discovered all the crap I had in there (I'm innocent, I didn't put any of it there myself!!). Oh. Except for the 'cleanmymac'. Bad advice. Bad move.

Mañana ...

Hey Luis,

So I got the paid version of EtreCheck. I did a number of the things (cleaning up) suggested in these posts, without going to a full blown re-install of everything (I've got 6 active TB's of apps and user files on this computer; will take a chunk of time to do something that major).

I'm wondering if things look different in the EtreCheck report now. I also include just the report of the Safari 'crash', which is the only thing I can really connect to the failed upload to Vimeo. NOTE: I got my brother to upload the movie file to Vimeo last night, using his computer and online setup (different company). He had no trouble at all. Film uploaded smoothly and in reasonable time, given the size of the file (36GB). So here is 1. just the report on the SAFARI crash; 2. and then the whole extensive report from EtreCheck. I can't see anything that looks weird. The suggested (unsigned) malware is just the files for my Brother printer.

Would love to know what you think?

terryb,

I would normally not have sent this ... but several forum members suggested it (or at least the EtreCheck - and the Safari Crash Report was IN the EtreCheck report), and the previous time I got some really good feedback, which I followed up on.

Interesting about the SoftRAID driver ... mmm ... maybe there is a 2nd one in there somewhere. I'm running two 16TB ThunderBlades RAIDed together, and that's a SoftRAID driver driving them. And those two things I'm constantly on the watch for updates -- they tell ME when they want to be updated. But I will check now ... thank you for that.
