Audio stops on Mac Studio display after a few seconds
My Mac Studio Display was working fine since purchase (March) but audio keeps cutting out after a few seconds of playing a video, etc.

Studio Display
I was on the phone with Apple Support for awhile, went to a Senior Advisor, and now some things are with Apple Engineering. I am waiting to hear back next week - but it is pretty odd now there are at least 3 cases popping up just today.
Does yours make two small "pops" before the audio drops? It happens across all apps and is completely repeatable if you switch audio output and then back to the Studio Display speakers.
Same problem as everyone else—sound would glitch and stop. I unplugged the power and let it sit for five minutes and it's working. Such an annoying glitch for brand new equipment, especially considering the price tag.
I’m a little irked the Apple Senior advisor I was working with never got back to me on this. After I let them do a recording of the operations on my system, uploaded audio files to Apple Engineering, etc.
At the very least they could point to this workaround while they figure out what causes it.
Clearly Apple did some thing and screwed the pooch. There is enough evidence, by the frequency of people having the same problem, same fix, that they pushed out some bug in recent firmware for the Studio Display. They need to admit it and do a mea culpa!!
PS Especially on the heels of $50 million settlement on the butterfly keyboard debacle.
I have a feeling that iOS is running all the time that the studio display is plugged in even if the display is off or the computer connected to it is shut down. Since this is the first monitor that has “software” running it like any other software, it occasionally has issues (power fluctuations, etc.) and some part of it freezes. The unplug of the display forces the iOS to “reboot” and probably cleans up its cache files and other things that normally happens on a reboot. Strange that so many reported on the same day, but I suspect it was folks who received the early orders and the iOS runtime was about the same. I know it is a pain and it would seem that if the monitor has been “off” for several hours and over night, the internal iOS could reboot once a month or so and avoid this end user issue that can be frustrating.
I've only seen the three bouncy startup dots on the screen of my Studio Display twice: once on the day I got my very early order unit and plugged it in, and once when I did the recent unplug, wait and plug in again fix. ebushohio's post makes very good sense to me. It is fun to think nefarious thoughts of Apple, but I suspect the software and hardware engineers were as nonplussed as we were. I further suspect that Apple right now is trying to figure exactly how to add an auto reboot line of code, with user options as to when they want it to occur. I have several devices, including a router, that can be set to automatically reboot on a regular basis. Kudos to you, ebushohio, for clear thinking!
I am certainly more than happy I don’t have a hardware issue and have to schedule a repair. The “fix” is easy enough for now, even if it has to be repeated every 3-4 months.
In the grand scheme of things - this is not one worth sweating over. I just appreciate when people do what they say they are going to do after so much time spent on hold, going thru several layers of support, etc. Product wise, I am still very happy.
I agree. Hardware issue which be a much bigger concern. While inconvenient, once you know a quick solution you can live with it until engineers can integrate a more permanent solution. Seems like turn it off and turn it on has caught on for fixes other places. You just have to be sure to unplug power and not just the Thunderbolt connection.
Same issue. The sound worked fine after a software update early in 2022 but has just now (July 25 2022) failed to work again.
Issue description = Studio display sound works on zoom meeting or music for a few seconds then makes two clicks and shuts off. The music app shows music is still playing. Switching to built in MacBook results in normal sound, then switching back to studio display speakers repeated the failure process.
The microphone function in the studio display seems to have the same problem so I suspect it is a software/driver issue.
Very unlike usual Apple product reliability.
I have the exact same issue now with my Mac Studio and 2 - Studio Displays. They play for 2 seconds on the displays and then I hear a pop, pop and then sounds goes out. After multiple restarts I can get the sound to stick with the Mac Studio, but not the displays. I am running 12.5 and Firmware: 67.1 on the displays.
Any help would be appreciated..
Agree that the Apple Studio display has to be unplugged (from the outlet, grrr) for 30-60 seconds to fix. I also powered down the Mac Studio, but I had tried a full shutdown before and it didn't fix it.
Mine just started doing this today - I unplugged everything for a while and everything seems to be fine.
Mine just started doing this also - wondering what is going on.
Same here. Cutting out in all apps: Sound preference pane, Music app, Zoom. Just started today.
Replying to myself: I see (and now remember) that there was an update back in May to the iOS the Studio Display is running to 15.5.
It just happen to me too. I had to unplug the Studio Display and plug it back in before it worked again.
