Apple TV 4K weird DNS lookups

Hello,

I use Pi-hole at home as a primary DNS service. I noticed that my Apple TV try to look up almost in every 12 seconds this DNS:

7ba3f64df98de730df38846b54ecfbdf7f61f80f.cws.conviva.com

What do you think? Is it normal operation or may I try to factory reset my Apple TV 4K? Device runs latest TV OS software (15.5.1).

Thank you,

regards,

Laszlo

Conviva looks to be CDN of sorts, as a middleman for a content provider.

If the streaming apps get instruction to fetch content using an erroneous or blocked host, then it might repeat requests a lot of times. As the previous attempt was unsuccessful, it may choose not to rely on the previous lookup.

Have you inquired with Pi-hole and/or its user groups if the behavior that you noticed could be normal operation through the use of this software? It might be specific to its sinkhole feature.

Can you link it to the use of any particular streaming app on Apple TV? Conviva is used by many companies including CBS, DAZN, HBO, Hulu, Sky, Sling TV, TED, Univision, and WarnerMedia.

So I think this is a normal operation one of these streaming apps. Am I right?

Quite possible, but a Pi-hole expert (not me) should really answer that. Good luck.

Pi-hole blocked these DNS queries but all of streaming apps just works fine.

Blocking is part of what it is designed to do. Possibly the queries were non-essential, or a valid alternative connection was found.
