Agreed, mostly. Apple could mitigate this, regardless of warranty status.
For widespread issues Apple DOES offer extended warranties→Apple Service Programs - Apple Support. We are not privy to their standards for determining whether a failure falls into this category where the problem is more than occasional random failures.
I don’t know how you can conclude that a hardware failure is due to software/firmware corruption. Some phones will have hardware defects. That’s what the 1 year warranty is for. If it were software just restoring the phone to factory settings would fix it.
And what is your definition of “slew”? 1? 5? 100? 500? out of an estimated 90 million of that model sold? Please give an actual definition of “slew” in actual number of reports you can provide links to.
But we’re now up to 15.5. And “suggested” is hardly evidence of anything. What did Apple support say when you contacted them about the problem? BTW, this is a user-to-user forum, with no real Apple participation.
So far you have stated “slew” and “lots” without defining either. “Lots” out of 90 million would probably be at least 9 million (10%). Have you seen that number anywhere?
Apple DOES track the incidence of failures, but only IF YOU REPORT THEM TO APPLE. As you apparently haven’t, how to you expect Apple to keep count?

The camera works fine, and articles suggest that these messages precipitated from ios release 15.1.
That could also mean that 15.1 added the ability to check the status of the camera. iOS 15 added a lot of hardware checks that hadn’t existed before; this can make it appear that the version caused the problem, where in reality it only started reporting an existing problem that had gone undetected.
The “unknown part” message seems clearly widespread and almost certainly due to software / firmware corruption.
The camera works fine, and articles suggest that these messages precipitated from ios release 15.1. The camera is the original one that came with the phone out of the box.
Have you bothered actually contacting Apple?
It seems to me that Apple has the highest ability to disclose these failure rates. Lots of folks have this issue, based upon my internet searches for mitigation.
Yes. They want to replace the “failed” camera. Please communicate respectfully.
Apple has the last word on it. If it’s out of warranty, and they say it failed, there is nothing anyone here can do about it.
