IPad Air refuses to enter dfu mode

I have a 1st Gen Ipad air here that refuses to do anything but enter dfu mode.

It won't boot normally or go into recovery mode by holding power and home button together

However when I do that combination with the home button and power button and have it pluged into a computer it will show up in Itunes and 3u Tools. However whatever I do when I try to restore the IPad it just disconnects, reconnects and then disconnects again and then after 10 mins or so Itunes will just say "An unknown error occurred (4047)"

Any Ideas?
