My 2014 MB PRO Trackpad has stopped working after sleep mode

After I turned ON(Awoke) the MBP Pro from sleep .. may after 4-5 days. Keypad starting working erratically ie some keys won't work et all or took a long press to be registered. Touch Pad stopped working altogether.

But after a while (may be after warming up) the Keypad removed and is functioning as normal now. However the Trackpad is still frozen and not working. I have not connected external wireless mouse as a workaround for now and it is working fine.

Hardward Diagnostics also was all clear for the Hardware .

I have tried step listed on the forum as well as some of the other sites where possibly a solution was mentioned . Listing few steps already tried.

  1. Long pressing power window to start MBP; closing the MBP and waking it again.
  2. reset NVRAM ; SMC
  3. force stop HIDD process.
  4. removed all the peripherals like connected printer ; stopped bluetooth
  5. start in safe mode

Can someone please suggest any other method which might have worked for them ? Any prompt help will be deeply appreciate.

Sounds like the laptop has some sort of hardware issue most likely associated with the Trackpad as that can also affect the Keyboard on some models (2015 especially -- not sure if same with 2014). Unfortunately due to how Apple designed these Retina laptops there isn't anything easy you can do about it to try to figure out which part is bad. This laptop is considered "Vintage" by Apple so you would need to have an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate (if possible) since even an AASP can only repair it as long as the parts are still available. An Apple Store may tell you what is wrong, but I don't think they can repair it unless they actually perform repairs within the Store. Because how this laptop is designed expect the repair to be expensive (minimum $200 US for a battery repair, or more likely up to $400/$500+ US for other repairs to the Keyboard/Trackpad or the Logic Board).

Personally I think it is time to retire this laptop.

Now if you have the 2015 model instead, then the problem may be as simple as a bad Trackpad Flex Cable which has an extremely high rate of failure only on the 2015 model. You can get the exact model of your laptop by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

I can move the arrow around using the track pad, HOWEVER I can't get it to click on anything. I have tried an external apple mouse and it doesn't respond either. I need a series of commands using the keyboard only to bring it back to life. Your wisdom is appreciated. Mahalo

Have you restarted the laptop?

Since the issue occurs with both the built-in and external devices, it tells me you have a software or configuration issue of some sort. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the same issue occurs as this will disable the third part items from launching automatically during boot.

Also, if you have an Intel Mac, then you can try Option Booting the laptop by holding the Shift key down immediately after hearing the Startup chime in order to access the Apple boot picker menu. See if you can select the boot drive by clicking on it with the built-in Trackpad or even the external mouse. This will bypass any possible software or configuration issues as well. You can do something similar if you have an M1 Mac by holding the power button until you get a menu option on screen.

If you have an Intel Mac, it also never hurts to try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset (hold the PRAM Reset for at least two chimes if possible).

You can try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected (Intel and M1 Macs). Again, this is a good way to test the trackpad & mouse clicks to interact with the diagnostic screen.

You may want to check out the Accessibility options to see there are any keyboard options. I've never investigated macOS options as I'm just a basic macOS user as my focus is primarily on repairing hardware. I'm not sure if there is anyway to program a key sequence to simulate a mouse click (look at the Keyboard System Preferences). My guess is a keyboard option will not work since your external mouse also fails to click.
