iTunes no longer available from the Microsoft Store?

I need to do a backup of a newer iPhone before resolving an issue with it, and Apple support advised I back it up manually to one of my two Windows laptops--one is Windows 8.1 and the other is Windows 10-- but neither computer shows iTunes as available in the Microsoft Store, even when clicking the link supplied by Apple itself on the apple.com/itunes page. The Microsoft Store is up and operating, but doing a search for itunes doesn't show the program. It's effectively un-findable on the Microsoft Store.

Any idea why this is happening or how else I can get it?

Okay, let's get a grip on this.

Support for Windows 7 and (effectively for Windows 8) has been discontinued by Microsoft so it's unrealistic for Apple to keep iTunes updated for either of those versions. Perhaps it's those operating systems that the people you referred to in your previous post are talking about. Just shows you how easy it is for misinformation to be bandied about.

However, you say that you have found a link to the last version available for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems (OS). I'll add it here for anyone else's benefit:

Neither version is available in the Microsoft Store. Nothing bizarre about it, it's not for the current version of iTunes.

The version of iTunes that is recommended is always the latest version, which today (11th July 2022) is iTunes 12.12.4.1, but that will not work on the older Windows OS.

As for the link I provided; it does work, I've just this second tried that link. The slash at the end is not the issue:

However, if you try it from an Android phone, it will not work and I'm going to hazard a guess that if you try it from your Windows 8 machine, that also will not work.

Well, I'd suggest that those posts are wrong!

While there were various conclusions as to why it's the case--some said it was glitchy enough that Microsoft kicked it out of its store, others said it was Apple's choice, etc.--what they all agreed on was that someone using Windows could no longer download iTunes.

That simply is not correct.

Here's my link to the page provided by Bill_T1, see if that works: iTunes - Apple

I've just tested it and I get this (I've added the very large orange arrow):

Ignore the Microsoft Store version (if it doesn't work for you) and scroll down to the Looking for other versions>Windows (arrowed). What happens?

Hi --

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately, what you're suggesting is what I explained in my original post isn't working for me (and continues to not work via your supplied link):

  • I go to apple.com/itunes on my Windows laptop.
  • It invites me to download iTunes for Windows at the Microsoft Store (with a link to do so).
  • That link goes to this page--https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/itunes/9PB2MZ1ZMB1S?hl=en-ca&gl=CA-- which has screen shots of iTunes and a Get in Store app link on the right (the only clear option to download anything)
  • And clicking on that link takes me to the Microsoft Store itself, with the result I'll supply here in a screen cap:

This is, for what it's worth, the same result I was getting on my wife's computer (via Chrome, whereas I use Firefox). As you can see, iTunes isn't even showing in search results, let alone being made available to download.

A quick online search for a statement akin to 'itunes not available for Windows' presents many posts regarding iTunes no longer being made available for Windows. While there were various conclusions as to why it's the case--some said it was glitchy enough that Microsoft kicked it out of its store, others said it was Apple's choice, etc.--what they all agreed on was that someone using Windows could no longer download iTunes. Some sites stated that if you already had it installed, it wouldn't be affected other than it may no longer upgrade, but those same sites said that, again, it wasn't available to download for Windows users who didn't already have it.

I'm just at a loss for where this leaves iPhone users who don't have iTunes available to do a sanctioned manual backup of their phone data. I've seen a number of third party services/apps that claim to back up data to Windows well and thoroughly, but I'm reluctant to use those, plus they cost quite a bit. But that seems to be the only option at the moment.

Hi, fiend —

Thanks for following up.

Your initial link didn’t work for me (I think it was the added slash at the end that did it), but when I went to apple.com/itunes manually and followed your suggested steps from there (going to the bottom link instead of through the Microsoft Store link), I was able to get a download from Apple instead, which was huge progress. So it seems the people having this discussion online are right insofar as iTunes isn’t available via Microsoft sources but is installable via Apple itself.

Downside: Your approach downloads a file that can onky be installed on Windows 10. So it didn’t work on my Windows 8 laptop, and while I thought my wife’s laptop was Windows 10 so tried the installation there, it’s Windows 8.1.

This is all getting me closer to where I need to be, and all the help is much appreciated, but is there a way to get it a version for Windows 8? Or am I just hosed on options due to having such outdated OS’s on our laptops?

Got all that. Thanks for the info.

Your final guess about it not working on a Windows 8 machine was probably the issue I was having, given it's that same laptop I was trying to use the link from and get the download for.

Having said all that, I finally got iTunes installed, only to find out once I got ahold of Apple--this is all regarding trying to get a manual backup for my iPhone before making some changes to it--that the latest version of iTunes I can get still won't talk to my iPhone 11.

Thanks again.

But it is not the "latest version". iTunes 12.10.11.2 is the last version of iTunes that will work with Windows 8. That's a significant difference.

As in the screen cap above, if I go to the Microsoft Store and type in "itunes", the iTunes program doesn't show up. Not a past version (which I appreciate they wouldn't have reason to carry), but also not a present version.

The method you suggested for me to get iTunes through Apple worked. I downloaded it and was installing it before it gave me the error saying that its version is for a newer OS than I had. But whether it was correct for my OS or not, iTunes is at least downloadable from Apple. But the Microsoft Store isn't showing to me in any version--regardless of its being usable for my OS or not. I wasn't able to get any version of the program from the Microsoft Store, whereas I was able to get various versions from Apple. Hence my understanding why people are discussing it not being available via Microsoft.

Thanks again for the help.
