How to stop Facebook Messenger app from launching at startup

Messenger will not get off of my menu bar...it was never set to Open at Login, is not checked, and I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it still shows up. Any solutions?

First. go to the System/Users & Groups/Login Items preference pane and make sure Facebook Messenger is not listed as a automatic launch at boot. If it is remove it.

Also if it's open and you're shutting down make sure this checkbox is not checked:

Lastly, check the preferences for Facebook Messenger to see if there's a preference to launch it at boot. If so deactivate.
