Hi Dublinga,
To start, did you have Messages in iCloud turned on? Check that in Settings > Tap your account > iCloud > Messages. If you previously had this turned on, try turning it back on and see if your messages download.
If you did not previously have Message in iCloud turned on, you can restore from your most recent backup if that backup occurred before the messages went missing.
