Apple TV 4K remote suddenly not adjusting volume

I’ve had the newest Apple TV for a few weeks and it’s been great, but today it randomly stopped controlling my TV’s volume/mute. It’s worked up until today. Now I can’t figure out how to restore compatibility.

I’ve tried restarting the Apple TV and my TV, including unplug/replug. I’ve tried toggling HDMI CEC on my TV, adjusting sound settings, flipping between control mode Auto and IR, even manually re-programming it to mimic my TV remote’s signals—nothing is putting it back.

When I use my iPhone to control the Apple TV, I can see sound options greyed out as if to say it’s not available. It seems like the Apple TV doesn’t know that it can control volume anymore.

Are there any other tricks I can try to get this back again that don’t involve completely wiping everything on these devices and logging back into a million streaming services?

This also happened to me with both of my Apple TV’s and both of my Samsung TVs. Not sure if it’s coincidence that it happened around the same time. Basically my volume wasn’t working.

FIX: I held down the home button (the screen icon) and the volume down for a few seconds until it said on the screen that the remote was disconnected. The controller then restarted and after a few seconds it worked again.

Good luck!

I’m just remembering now that I think this broke when I was airplaying my phone to the TV and showing photos via Google Photos. At one point I changed the volume from my phone, which seemed to affect volume playback on the Apple TV, but after that the ATV remote stopped controlling TB volume.

I tried airplaying Gphotos again to see if I could somehow reset things but so far it hasn’t worked. Google has clearly built some kind of client for Apple TV for showing photos and videos, so I think it’s doing something weird.

I’m having the same problem that started a few days ago. I’ve tried all of the things you have with no luck in being able to control the volume again. Mine stopped working while my wife was adjusting the volume with with the Apple TV remote. All of a sudden it just didn’t work. I’m hoping someone has been able to find a solution for this.
