USB ports lose power charging ability on M1 MacBook Pro

Hi all:

I've seen this posted before but referring to a MacMini M1. There was no solution listed other than "don't put your MacMini to sleep" which is a ridiculous response to a very legitimate problem and a workaround at best. For a MacBook Pro, it does go to sleep when you close the clamshell which is one of the features of a laptop--you take it to other places and it needs to be closed when that happens.

Nonetheless, whenever I close my Macbook Pro to transport it to another location (which I do daily) and then re-open it, the USB ports no longer draw power nor produce power. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer after which the ports work fine. In the various locations that I use my MBP, I have USB charging cables which work perfectly well, most of the time. One location has a projector and a USB cable (with charging ability) that connects to the projector and charges the laptop at the same time. Another location has a short USB cable so I can connect quickly and without a nest of cables. etc. When the laptop wakes up from sleep, the charging ability stops working. Also, connected USB devices (iPhones) will also stop charging as well.

Does anyone know of a legitimate way to fix this problem? And please, no responses like "don't put it to sleep."

Monterey 12.x seems to have some USB-C issues from the various complaints about the related problems. I've never used my 2021 MBP to power other devices and so don't have any advice beyond seeing if turning the USB-C connector upside down changes things? It's been reported that some USB-C cables are not fully wired and if plugged in wrong don't work properly. With USB-C there is a negotiation between the devices that doesn't exist with regular USB and if the cable is not fully wired can cause issues.

Wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for the input. The cables work pretty much most of the time. It is only when the laptop goes to sleep (and then reawakened) that they stop charging the laptop. I've used 3rd party cable, Apple cables, etc. with similar results. I think your point about Monterrey and M1 chips having issues is probably about right. Hoping someone has another suggestion, but for now, I simply reboot the computer when this happens.
