Not reading RAW GPS details via XMP file on import

Hi all

On importing Canon RAW only files with geotagged xmp files the GPS details are not imported. Did a further experiment with two photos from my Fuji camera - one jpeg+RAW and the other RAW only. JPEG+RAW works whether JPEG or RAW used as original but separate RAW only does not work.

Any thoughts for successful RAW only + GPS XMP file import?

PS Relatively new to Photos for my DSLR workflow so can't give conclusive past experience with RAW+GPS XMP file

FWIW the exported .xmp has a flaw in Big Sur and Monterey Photos.app because the GPS references are incorrect.

In the standard workflow this causes western and southern hemispheres to erroneously go to the other side of the globe. I have reported this to Apple three times in recent months but the error persists.

Luckily GraphicConverter can copy even that flawed .xmp GPS to images and raws correctly (exiftool needs a workaround for that).

I did a quick test and noticed that GraphicConverter can copy (exported from Photos.app) .xmp to .dng but for some reason not to .cr3.

Furthermore, I could not get Monterey Photos.app to import its own sidecar .xmp info to neither .jpg nor .dng neither .cr3 in my quick test.

Photos, .xmp and GPS seems to be quite a mess with that Photos GPS reference flaw as a fly in the ointment.

Correction: GraphicConverter copies .xmp GPS to all my test raw (.cr2, .cr3, .dng, .rw2) but it copies it to XMP:XMP-exif instead EXIF:GPS where I expected to find it. GC also warns the user that messing with raw metadata might potentially corrupt the raw image. For this reason I have been very careful and updated metadata mainly in exported .jpg.

But I did notice that Photos 7.0 correctly imported the GPS in XMP:XMP-exif in all but the .cr3 raw images. And if the raw has also EXIF:GPS then it is read and the XMP:XMP-exif is ignored although it might be correct.

I hope I did not introduce much more confusion...

I use GeoTagr app on iOS which then syncs to its Mac Companion app. Previously also used successfully with Aperture. Photos does work fine when importing jpeg and jpeg+RAW files with the accompanying XMP just not with RAW only. Workaround for now will be to use jpeg+RAW for my canon camera, too. Have you another geo tagging app you know that works with RAW only in Photos and I can test that?

thanks

[Apologies for the delay - Apple did not like me mentioning the PB programme in this forum and kept deleting my reply]

Thanks Mattei for the additional insights into Photos export challenges as well as your own import experiences. I'm on .cr2 files (plus Fuji .raf) so was interesting to read that just .cr3 was problematic in your final re-import tests.

I'm on Monterey PB for good measure so was also interesting to read about some wider issues with that OS and Big Sur but as I said before I'm a bit too new to Photos and non-iPhone camera workflows with it to know definitively what is my own set-up and what might be wider issues. Will use the paired workaround for now and keep an eye on RAW only from time-to-time. Have filled a bug report via the PB programme, too.
