updating whatsapp on older IOS

whatsapp is not allowing me to access the app, requiring me to update whatsapp before doing this - unfortunately this is not possible since it requires my phone to have a certain IOS in order to update. However we cannot update the IOS as it requires a certain amount of data to download - data which is not available since the phone does not have enough storage. It is impossible to free up storage (I have tried this but overall it is negligible since the phone has very little storage anyway). I have tried putting the SIM card in a newer model but I can't transfer whattsapp data (because whattsapp does not allow me to access settings - only shows the update screen).

Please give advice, thank you.

You may have had the phone for 5 years, but it was released 9 years ago, and discontinued 7 years ago. So the youngest your phone can be is 7 years, but the 9 year old design it what’s limiting what you can do with it. You should be able to update it to iOS 12.5.5 using a computer→Here are 2 links, choose the one for your computer.

Thanks for the reply, I cannot update my IOS since that requires storage in order to download - storage which I do not have since my phone is old and does not have enough storage in it at all, and it isn't possible to free up enough room for the update. My phone is 5 years old. I also cannot transfer my Whatsapp data to a new phone since Whatsapp only shows the update screen when I go on it - no settings at all.
