Trying to restore iphone due to black screen but obviously cannot type in passcode to open in itunes

Trying to back up iphone that has black screen. obviously not able to type in pass code. how would I be able to do this?

Unfortunately, there's no way to "Trust" the computer without entering the passcode on the device.


If the display is physically broken, but the device works (try switching on and off silent mode to see if the haptic triggers), get it serviced at an Apple authorized service provider. Normally, it's always good to have a backup before service, but obviously that's not possible in this case. See here - iPhone Screen Repair & Replacement - Official Apple Support


If the screen is fine, but the device won't turn on, try a force restart. For your iPhone XS Max, Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.



Make sure to click the buttons very quickly! The timing is a little tricky, so try it several times.


If the device still won't turn on, it's a hardware problem. You'll have to get it repaired, if possible- hopefully with your data intact.
