Hi!
Is there a way to change, what seems to be the default name, for files saved to the desktop? Whatever I try to name them it switches back to the name Picture1.pdf , picture1.jpg etc. I have hundreds of them and would prefer to be able to rename them already on the desktop and not just in files like "Documents".

I can only think of two reasons why such an odd behavior is happening?
a) some software conflict, as could be caused, as already suggested, by some “cleaning” software;
b) you may have inadvertently added a “Folder Action” to the Desktop, and this automatically renames files.
In this case, my money is on b)
Launch Folder Actions Setup, and see if there is a folder action associated with the Desktop folder.

I think you cracked it there! This has been bothering me since I first got a Mac ten years ago. Launching the Folder Action Setup for the desktop folder there was a script ticked saying "rename screen capture" - or something like that. I have never heard of this folder action setup before but now I hope my problems are over. Many thanks!
I've never had a problem changing the default name prior to hitting the save button. Is this the problem or are you wanting to change hundreds of file names all at once or what?
It's saving a single file on the desktop. I rename it and save it. And seconds later it's changed to picture1.
Exactly how are you changing the name?
You might want to start in safe mode and see if that solves this - it tends to solve weird problems.
Are you running any cleaner apps?
