remove mail from macbook

I don't understand why my MacBook storage has Mail @ 19.2GB and I've deleted some much stuff! I prefer to remove Mail for a time so that I'll have more storage for a large iMovie I'm doing.

  1. Does anyone know if the app itself is running that much space? That seems like a lot!
  2. Googling "removing Mail" seems like a no win situation....but there's gotta be a way for me to remove all my stuff if that's taking up the storage...I've even tried unselecting "Enable account"...that storage amount (19.2GB) is still there.

Please help with any solutions...better yet, any helpful way to free up space to get through this iMovie!

The only way to free up space is to delete user data. If you wish to keep it, you need to move it off-disk to an external drive or cloud storage, then delete what you copied. iCloud Drive is not a long term storage solution, it's an interactive service.

To reduce mail footprint, you must delete emails and and attachments. If you wish to keep the attachments, save them to disk. But. then you're once again loading up your disk.

I appreciate the reply. My frustration is really with this mail app...no matter how many emails I deleted...I went through and wiped out 2 1/2 years worth....this number didn't change! 19.2GB...this screen here (per your helpful link) doesn't allow me to select anything...I don't understand why I can't remove my email account on my Mac for a time and then add it back.

If you can't remove it an account, either you are not an admin user or your OS is damaged. If not an admin user, you need to find the admin user to allow you to do this.

If you are an admin usr and you absolutely cannot remove an email account, you need to consider reinstalling your OS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

Reinstalling the OS will not touch user data, setting or apps.

You didn't say what version of the OS you're on, but Monterey 12.5 just came out. If your Mac is eligible to run Monterey you should upgrade to it. Whatever OS you can run, you should be on its latest version regardless unless tere is a specific reason not to be.
