Erasing & rebooting

I was given a Mac Mavericks. The previous owner did erase their info therefore, I attempted to do so. I got as far as erasing it, however, when I'm attempting to sign in using my apple ID, I get the message that my ID or password is incorrect. I am positive I am typing it correctly.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,, as the computer is for my special needs son.

Good day to you PhoenixAshes136,

Can you tell us more about where you’re attempting to enter an Apple ID and password? We ask this to determine if perhaps the device is looking for an Apple ID that the device may be locked to or if you’re attempting to sign in to a user account or something else.

If Activation Lock is the issue, the previous owner can remove it remotely. How to remove Activation Lock

Remove Activation Lock on the web if a device is offline
1. Go to www.iCloud.com/find.
2. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
3. At the top, click All Devices.
4. Select the device that you want to remove from iCloud.
5. Click Remove from Account.

Thanks.

Thanks for replying, PhoenixAshes136, and that additional info, it really helps! You may need to reset NVRAM if this is an older Mac with an Intel process: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support

Also, looking at this Apple resource, you may not be using the correct keys during startup:

"On an Intel-based Mac, you can use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup to be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. Or you can use Option-Command-R during startup to be offered either the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac, or in some cases the macOS that came with your Mac or the closest version still available."

I had taken steps to erase & turned machine on while I held down command + control +options + R. Got to OS X Utilities. Chose "Reinstall OS X". Pressed continued and got to OS X Mavericks set up. It then says to download & restore OS X your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple. I click 'CONTINUE" I get to a page that says OS X will be installed on Macintosh HD. I click "install" & that's where it asks for Apple ID & password and says it doesn't recognize the password & ID.

I don't have anyway of getting a hold the previous owner.

Thank you for your assistance!
