iPad 2 on iOS 9.3.5 stuck on connector to iTunes screen

iPad 2 constrained to iOS 9.3.5 is stuck on the Connector to iTunes screen; power/home button combo does not release. I would restore but got here trying to backup; no backup since 2016 (due to these kinds of issues). Attempts to backup resulted in unable to backup messages. I was able to manually transfer some of the app data in iTunes, but was unable to download or sync photos and movies. I reset network settings, then tried to update, but got Error 27. Tried different cables, USB ports, computers. Is my only option to factory reset and lose photos and movies? If I let the iPad run until it loses power, will that do anything? Right now, it's a brick.

If you follow all of the steps in that support document, then did you scroll further down and get to this section?

Check your hardware

If you see error 53, use these steps.

If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:

  • 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 16
  • 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
  • 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, 1669

Here's what to check. Try again after each step:

  1. If iTunes is already open, quit and reopen it.
  2. Check your third-party security software.
  3. Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your device.
  4. Check for outdated or modified software

If you still see the error, contact Apple Support.
