Where are photos really kept?

Stupid question I know but every time I try to use a website to upload photos I can get no further than this:

In fact not even this community board allows me to delve further than the photo libraries - I say libraries because I've copied everything from iCloud to HD as I'm sick of paying for iCloud but can't get out no matter what, separate issue.

Anyhow, I know some sites don't like HEIC photos and I know how to convert but, really, is there any way short of copying photos to desktop in the right format in order to find a location that works for uploading?

Ten years ago Apple made life really easy, now it's just expensive and increasingly tedious, just glad there's a great community to help people like me.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

This works exactly the same as it used to 10 years ago in both iPhoto and Aperture, and just as easily. The entire library is available in every 'Open...' or 'Attach... dialogue in the OS:

See where it says Photos there, under Media?

But note that's NOT a finder window. It's the dialogue you get when you go to attach your photo to where-ever.

And then have you ever noticed the Share button? It looks like this:

Top right of the Photos window. You can set any app you like up there as a destination.

So, just like 10 years ago...
