No DAC Output - Macbook Air

Recently, I have not been able to my Macbook Air to play music through a USB DAC.

I have two DACs, one being an iFi Zen DAC V2 and the other being a Cyrus Soundkey mini headphone DAC. With whichever DAC I use, sound output does not work. The issue has only occurred over the last couple of months, without any changes to any settings.

I have tried both DACs multiple times, through various connection options. I have tried to connect my desktop DAC with both a USB-B to USB-A cable with a USB-C adapter attached, and through two separate USB-B to USB-C cables. I have tried connecting the mini DAC with both a USB-A cable with a USB-C adapter attached, and a Mini-USB to USB-C cable. I have also tried to change the output, using headphones with both DACs, as well as sending the signal from the desktop DAC to my integrated amplifier and out through speakers. The same occurs with each option.

Whenever sound is played through a DAC, it can be heard for approximately 3 seconds, then there is silence. The sound never returns. This is the case with any source for the sound, whether streamed or from files saved to the Macbook Air. Sound output by Bluetooth, through the Macbook's internal speakers, and through the 3.5mm headphone jack still works as it should.

Does anyone have a solution? It is meaning that I am not able to enjoy Apple Music Lossless through my Macbook, which is pretty disappointing!

Hello there MAGillingham,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Do you experience this same issue with the lossless turned off? Try toggling the lossless setting, and let us know the outcome. To do so, per the Apple Support article: About lossless audio in Apple Music - Apple Support

"How to turn lossless on or off

  1. Go to Settings > Music.
  2. Tap Audio Quality.
  3. Tap Lossless Audio to turn it on or off. From here, you can choose the audio quality for streaming and downloading audio."

We look forward to hearing back from you.

MAGillingham,

Thanks for the information. It sounds like you've done some great isolation for the issue, in the article previously shared it recommends to ensure your macOS is fully updated as well.

If all is up to date, and the issue remains you may want to contact the DAC's manufacturer. Contact a third-party vendor
