MacBook Air M1 2020 DVD Player still won't play DVDs

DVD Player did not work on an M1 MacBook Air running Big Sur. Other Macs worked using the same external DVD player. The symptom: the DVD mounted, DVD Player started, but hitting play (it did not auto-play) just resulted in a black screen.

Elsewhere in this forum people suggested upgrading to Monterey. Did that and — no change. Still a black screen.

VLC works.

I simply got out of the habit of using Apple's DVD Player several years ago. However, on macOS 11.6.8 running on an M1 mini, the DVD Player presents a black screen when attempting to play a DVD in my 2012 Samsung Blu-ray writer. Same issue whether the operating system is up already, or from a cold boot. Yes, VLC works just fine.

On my 16-in MBP M1 Pro running macOS 12.5, I connect the same player via a USB-A => USB-C adapter to the running operating system. The DVD mounts, and Apple's DVD Player automatically starts playing the disc. So does VLC.

The Apple DVD Player is the same version (6,0) on both operating systems.
