2009 iMac 27" won't boot and has very thin lines covering the entire screen

Hi Everyone.

Was working on my iMac last night - all was well, but turned if off as a storm was approaching.

Next morning I turned it on. No chimes, no Apple logo and no boot progress bar. Just these weird lines. I have lines on a Mac before, but usually after booting, and Desktop was still visible.

I'd be grateful if anyone knows what this is. I suppose it's time to get rid of the old girl but I'd like to know...

It appears that the Graphic Processor Unit has failed. Since this model is considered obsolete buy Apple they won't work on it and may have trouble getting parts. The labor costs alone would be a several times the value of the machine.

The latest system that model can run is High Sierra. That last security update for it was in 2020.

Personally I wouldn't invest any money in that old a machine.

If budget concerns prevent considering a new Mac look at Apple's reconditioned models. They are essentially equal to a new model with the same warranties and Apple Care availability.

Another good source of quality, reconditioned Mac is OWC (MacSales.com). Those are the only two soures of rebuilt Macs I'd consider.
