Dark mode not working correctly

I've got my system set to Dark, but all the windows remain light.

I've got a secondary question as well. I'd really like to always have the windows dark, but have a dynamic wallpaper. My eyes can't take white screens but that doesn't mean I want a dark wallpaper.

I don't know where to begin to fix the problem. It's a new install of the OS. I've restarted and all that.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Hello!

Please check this: Big Sur Dark Mode issue - Apple Community

To begin set your MacBook Theme to light. After that:

Open the Terminal on your MacBook and put in the following:

defaults write -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool No

Restart your Macbook switch to darkmode and see if it worked.

If not, set your Theme back to LightMode. And open your Terminal again and put in the following:

defaults delete -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance

Restart your Macbook switch to darkmode and see if it worked.

I would stay away from dynamic wall paper and you can set your own preference for the specific wall paper appearance.

Although Apple has published developer guidelines on how to automatically detect appearance modes, and switch an application appearance based on dark or light selection — not all applications do this, even from Apple. What Apple wants to have a default dark background will detect it.

Pages, Preview, Mail (viewed message) are all deliberately white backgrounds by default, and neither Mail nor Preview can change that. Pages has a black template which produces other PITA export and print challenges. My Monterey Finder windows are dark backgrounds.

By default, there is no NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance property present in my Monterey 12.5 global defaults, yet those applications that are so developed, automatically switch backgrounds and text color on dark/light mode changes.

You probably noticed that Apple only provides a handful of dynamic wall papers and one has a selection choice of either Dynamic, Dark (still), or Light (still). The latter two are purposely not dynamic as "still" implies. Otherwise, in the latter two cases, one can choose an available, or download light or dark examples of the Light and Dark Desktop pictures.
