When I connect the SuperDrive to my macbook and put in a movie I want to watch nothing pops up on the screen. Even when I check Finder nothing is there. Apple doesn't list this laptop under compatible devices but maybe it hasn't been updated? Don't see why it wouldn't be compatible.
Edit: I am using Apple's USB-C to USB-A adapter to connect it.

Just figured this out for myself. You need a USB-A to USB-C adapter that doesn't have a wire- I purchased this 2 pack from Anker. It's sturdy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HZ6PS61?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Try VLC. DVD Player is the issue.
I don't think it's simply the wire. Apple's Multiport Adapter works for me.

I'll second trying VLC that dialabrain mentioned above...it's worth trying this first before purchasing more hardware/adapters because VLC is free. I've been using it for many years now.
