I'm trying to update my OS to Monterey but keep getting an error message that "The update could not be verified". I'm in Systems Preferences, so it seems odd that it isn't verified, so thought maybe there was something else I needed to do. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try again from a SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
login and run the installer.
If you downloaded the full installer—
Applications/Install macOS Monterey.app
The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes, is macOS 12.5
