iOS/iPadOS does not provide automated backup directly to a USB drive. However, you can manually copy files to connected USB storage using the native Files App.

Some third-party App also provide automated file-backup to connected or Cloud storage. One App that provides comprehensive backup capability that comes readily to mimd is Stratopherix FileBrowser - Document Manager, or its “pro version” FileBrowser Professional:

You might review the extensive online Manual and help files to determine suitability for your needs.

You should note however that backups created by third-party Apps will only include files - and not your iPad settings.

Depending upon your iPad model, to connect USB storage to your iPad, you may require an appropriate USB adapter and/or USB hub.

  • Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter

If you have one of the newest iPad Pro models, with a USB-C connector, you may need to utilise a powered USB hub (i.e., it has its own source of power) - connecting both the iPad Pro and the storage device to ports on the hub.
