sony wf-1000xm3 ipod touch 5th gen issues

i have an ipod touch 5th gen and a pair of sony wf-1000xm3 headphones. when i pair them to it they connect and then disconnect immediately. if i tap on them again they connect and stay connected but aren't recognized by the ipod so music plays through the ipod speaker instead of the earbuds. has anyone been able to solve this problem so the earbuds will work with this ipod model

I would begin by making sure that none of your other devices that are paired with the iPod have their Bluetooth turned on and that no other device that you've paired the earbuds to is on. In other words, make the connection exclusive; turn off the Bluetooth on everything else that might interfere with this setup.

If that doesn't fix the issue I suggest that you unpair the iPod and the Sony WF-1000XM3 and then pair them (again, making sure that nothing else is on at the time).

Like most Bluetooth devices, these earbuds can be paired with several devices at a time but can only play music from one device at a time, so the steps above are designed to rule out the possibility that other devices are trying to grab the connection.

If that still doesn't sort out the problem, can I suggest that you try the Sony support site as there should be more focused help there. The link (if Apple leave it up) is https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/wireless-headphones-bluetooth-headphones/wf-1000xm3/articles/00274970

If the link gets removed, simply go to Sony's website, lookup the earbuds and from that go to the Support or Questions & Answers pages which will be linked at the bottom of the page. Curiously, I notice that Sony refer to the device as headphones, not earbuds (not that it makes any difference).

i've tried all that and the weird thing is they work fine with a 4th gen ipod touch and a 2nd gen ipod touch so i don't get why the 5th gen would be any different

They are different in that a 5th gen iPod Touch actually has Bluetooth 4.0 on it, whereas the 2nd and 4th gen Touch both have Bluetooth 2.1. That doesn't mean that is the issue; if anything I would expect the older iPods to have issues, rather than the 5th gen one.

The Sony things have Bluetooth 5, which is backwards compatible with devices using earlier versions of Bluetooth, so that means that your setup should work.

Unless anyone else chimes in with a useful suggestion all I can suggest is that you try again the steps I outlined and if that doesn't fix the issue, that you contact Sony to see what they have to say.
