Why doesn't the Mail window open without anything appearing below the menu bar?

Why doesn't the Mail window open without anything appearing below the menu bar? I have Yahoo mail via ATT and I can access that but the apple mailer does not sync with it to show my mail. I have checked my mailer''s accounts and Yahoo mail is correctly listed.

Restarting the computer is always a great trouble shooting protocol if you have an issue...

Because you closed the active window using the red pill button(?)

Command Q will quit the App.

There are very few apps that will quit w/ the red pill.

If you mail is launched Command 0 ( that is a Zero) will open the message viewer

That was not the most helpful answer but I resolved the issue a different way. Here is more background to the issue.

It started with the emailer rejecting an email to be sent out. That was not an Apple issue per se. It was an ATT/yahoo mail issue involving log on. This has affected many other users and ATT support is very circuitous to reach. However, during the process I updated my operating system, but the emailer was not operational. I could access email via the internet Yahoo server. Remembering that updating software usually requires a restart, I realized that this time that prompt did not come up. So I tried to restart but the emailer would not close even though it was non functional. Force quit did not work, but shutting the computer off using the keyboard on/off button did work. After the restart, the emailer had regained its functionality. I hope that this helps others that run into this problem.
