Macro Photography & iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max: problems

All my iPhone 13 Pro settings are as suggested in Apple's article "Capture close-ups with macro photos and video" -- I am re-posting because the issue remains unsolved.

If taking a photo of something tiny -- say a seed head or flower on a thin stalk & without another surface immediately behind it -- the camera apparently can't recognize these tiny objects & macro mode simply does not come on.

Put your hand, a larger leaf, or something else behind the tiny object, THEN the macro mode comes on. Not wonderful images, but the ones I'm attaching will maybe illustrate this.

I continue to be baffled that there is no way to simply turn on/lock on macro mode so that it can be used to photograph very small subjects that don't have an immediately adjacent backdrop.

You can control automatic macro switching by going to Settings > Camera, then turning on Macro Control. With Macro Control on, your Camera app displays a macro button when your iPhone is within macro distance of a subject.

The problem is that macro mode can't be selected & locked on so that the camera remains in macro mode until the user de-selects macro mode. You can disable macro mode, but you can't enable it & keep it on. "Preserve Settings" doesn't do the trick.

As the writer of the following says, "Hopefully, Apple will add a manual button soon, the same way you can manually jump to the ultrawide camera by tapping “0.5” or the zoom lens by tapping “3”..."
