1st Generation Apple Pencil Bluetooth connectivity

I have a 1st generation iPad pencil that I use with a 2018 iPad with home button. I recently noticed that if I were to turn Bluetooth off wait a few seconds and turn it back on the Pencil doesn’t automatically re-connect and I have to plug it into the iPad to connect. Is there a fix to this or am I simply SOL? I ask because I wanted to set up a shortcut that would briefly turn off Bluetooth, disconnecting my headphones so I can run a shortcut on my iPhone to connect them. Sadly this forced me to manually re-connect the Pencil each time. Thanks for any help.

Your Apple Pencil is working as designed. Disabling Bluetooth on your iPad, even briefly, will break the pair-bond.

This feature does have an intended benefit; once the pairing is broken, an undisturbed (stationary) Pencil will eventually enter its low-power shipping state - in which all electronic activity will cease, reducing battery utilisation to near zero. In this condition the Pencil is as close to completely powered-off as is possible, extending the period of storage before the battery becomes permanently and irreversibly discharged.
