Latest Catalina update downloaded, installed, won’t finish restarting

Left it restarting overnight. Then shut it off and tried again a few times, once for 24 hours.

White Apple appears and status bar progresses eventually to what looks like the end but never actually finishes.

Hoped to try restarting in safe mode but wireless keyboard appears to have unpaired. I replaced the batteries and pressed the power button; after green a moment, it double-blinks for a while but never activates (pressing caps lock doesn’t cause the key’s light to go on).

This seems to be the only USB keyboard available but the compatibility list only cites iMacs with Retina displays. To my recollection my 27” iMac does not have a Retina display. Would that really mean it’s incompatible with this keyboard then?

Thank you for your replies. That was the one keyboard on the site listed as having USB connectivity.

I see that it is also a rechargeable wireless Bluetooth keyboard; does the USB cable only work in one direction for charging and not serve as an input to the computer to transfer keystroke data? I wouldn’t press the question if I found another wired keyboard on the site.

Can you (or anyone) point me to an Apple-recommmended alternative new wired keyboard?

Thanks.

It didn’t work.

Although I was inclined to get an Apple keyboard or at least a third-party featured here on the site, you said the keyboard I linked to on the Apple site that says it has a USB connection isn’t actually a USB keyboard. So because of what you said about even a Windows keyboard being sufficient, I got a cheap Logitech Windows USB keyboard.

I plugged it into the back, turned on the Mac, immediately held the shift key, and the white Apple appeared and the status bar started, but a moment later it went away and then immediately reappeared, and this kept happening in fairly rapid repetition.

Does this sound familiar to you or anyone? Is the keyboard here on the site listed as having a USB connection really not a USB keyboard? Should I get a wired third-party keyboard designed for use with Macs and expect a different result?
