OS Monterey Admin Can't Share Files

I'm trying to set up a home network between my laptop and my desktop. I'm the only user and the Admin for both machines. I've turned on File Sharing and can connect between the two computers, and access files from my laptop to the desktop, but I can't access files from the desktop to the laptop -- I get an error message saying I don't have permission to read them. When I try to change permissions for the hard drive on the laptop I'm told I can't do that because I don't have permission. As I said, I am the only user and the admin for both machines.

Were both users you created on each Mac created first (or in same order on both)?

The first user has UID 501, second 502, etc. If the two users don't have the same UID on each Mac, that may be why one can access user files and not from the other.

When you access the network share, are you connecting using a user name from the Desktop system or the Laptop system?

Restarting in recovery mode and rebuilding permissions seems to have solved the problem. Thanks for your help.
