cmd+shift+4 capture portion of screen directly to clipboard

When i use cmd+shift+4 [ Take a screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support ] to capture a portion of my screen i'm finding that if i then use cmd+v to paste it into something like notes it doesn't work.

I have to first open that portion of my screen capture file, stored on desktop, and hit the copy button to put it into clipboard so i can then cmd+v paste it into something like notes.

The article above says i can add ctrl to the mix, i.e. ctrl+cmd+shift+4, if i want to send the portion of screen capture straight to the clipboard which is a 4 finger yoga exercise every time i want to do this common activity.

Is there a way to configure that cmd+shift+4 keyboard shortcut, or define a cmd+shift+s[snip] alternative, that will send the result directly to the clipboard [ stack ] instead an image file on the desktop?

Yes. Press cmd+shift+5 , to bring up the ScreenShot control bar. Click on Options> menu, and set the location of the screen shot to Clipboard under Save To. Once done, press escape to close the control bar. Then take a screen shot again and it should be ready to paste anywhere that accepts pasted images.
