out going email not working

Hey all,

about 2 days ago my outbound email on icloud suddenly stopped working. It worked at 3:30 and not at 4:30. NOTHING changed...no changes to my email SMTP (or other email settings), no installation of new programs or modification of settings on other programs...NOTHING. It was working and then suddenly it wasn't. I spent some time on the phone with Apple care but no solution was found. I get email just fine (so my IMAP is good) but I can't send emails (so apparently my SMTP is F.U.B.A.R.). HELP!!!!!!!!

Mac Pro, macOS 10.15

Hello Cosmogrove,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand you're unable to send outgoing emails from your iCloud account. We'll be happy to help.

First you'll want to follow these steps:

Things to check first

  1. Check the system status of iCloud Mail.
  2. Check that you turned on iCloud Mail:
    • On your Mac, open the Mail app then choose Mail >Preferences. Click Accounts, then select your iCloud account in the sidebar. Under Account Information, make sure that the account is turned on and the status is online.
    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and check that Mail is turned on.

3.Make sure you that haven't exceeded your iCloud storage limit. If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, learn how to make more space available in iCloud

4.Make sure that you're using the latest version of software on your device.

If you can't send mail from the Mail app on your Mac

Use these steps if your message can't be delivered, you're attaching a large file, or the recipient didn't get your message.

If you receive an alert when you send a message from your @icloud.com email address using Mail on your Mac

If you see an alert that says “This message could not be sent. It will remain in your Outbox until it can be sent.", make sure that iCloud is your Outgoing Mail Account.

  1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences.
  2. Click the Accounts tab.
  3. Select your iCloud email account.
  4. Click the Server Settings tab. If iCloud isn't listed as the Outgoing Mail Account, select iCloud.

If you choose Edit SMTP Server List, you won't see your iCloud account listed as an option.

These steps are outlined in this helpful article: If iCloud Mail isn't working - Apple Support

Following these recommended steps may help to resolve the ability to send outgoing emails from your iCloud account.

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Kind regards.

I have tried all those things and more…spent hours on the phone with (the VERY NICE) people at tech support. Nothing has fixed this problem. I’ve basically been told that it can’t be fixed (under my current iCloud account running on my desk top)…so, um yeah.

The mail was working just fine at 3:30pm and not at :430pm. I hadn’t changed ANY settings in any program, I hadn’t even gone into any settings tabs. Heck I hadn’t even opened or closed ANY programs.

It worked just fine, until it didn’t. Now I’m stuck and being told there is no solution. I guess I’m just supposed to log into the iCloud website any time I want to respond to or send a message. VERY VERY VERY disappointed Apple!!!
