Text character count not working

I have the character count option turned on in my phone's settings and it used to work perfectly: #/160 without emojis, #/70 with emojis or special characters. I've made no changes to my keyboards, but now it doesn't matter which keyboard I use (I prefer the SwiftKey keyboard I've been using for ages), the character count isn't working. Once I get to the 2nd line of a text I'm typing, a "character count" will finally show up, but even if I've typed 1000 characters, it shows my character count to be 0/0 every time. This has been going on for a couple of months & I very frequently text people who get the broken messages out of order if I go over 160 characters. Anyone know how to fix this? I have checked the settings for my 3rd party keyboard as well to no avail.

Hello ClaireBear1930,

Does the issue still occur after restarting your iPhone using the steps below that are also found here: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

  1. "Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

A restart can normally resolve minor issues with the device.

Also, have you tried turning the feature off and back on in Settings > Messages, character count?

Best regards

Unfortunately, yes. I've probably tried turning character count off, restarting my phone, turning it back on (then after seeing if it was working), restarting my phone again with character count back on 20 times. This actually began the day I switched from the Sprint SIM card to the virtual T-Mobile SIM card since customer care was pushing me to switch SIM cards for over a year because T-Mobile bought out Sprint, but idk how that could have an effect on character count 🤷🏼‍♀️. Nothing else for screwy the day I switched the Sim card. To note, I did not change my cell plan at all, I'm still on a Sprint plan because T-Mobile didn't force us to change over to one of their plans at any point.
