I have a macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 and I have regular reminders to upgrade to a newer version Monteray. I did not do this when it first came out. I know there are often teething problems. Over past week I see that an automatic update is available. I cannot find out what this because it is thinking about it for hours? My iPhones have had system updates over past week and these are connected to my i-Mac. Could this be the cause?

Then boot your Mac in the safe mode via the instructions I posted earlier to try and install the update from the safe mode
It is 2017 purchase and is compatible with macOS Monterey
Cannot download any system updates.
