I have not used an old Apple I.D. (old email address) since moving almost 10 years ago. For some reason, today, I have been repeatedly asked to provide a password to sign in to the old Apple I.D. (old email address) for messages and icloud? It will not let me exit out of the requests.

Did you keep the same Apple ID account, but change the email associated with it? If so, follow What to do after you change your Apple ID or password to disassociate the old Apple ID from your devices including Messages.
You can also see if you can sign out of the Apple ID by using your password if you changed just the Apple ID email. If you created an entirely new Apple ID account, see If you forgot your Apple ID password.
