Can’t move email messages to folders

I have 3 email accounts on my iPhone 12. I have always been able to move messages from the inbox of each account to folders within the same account using the little folder icon at the bottom of the screen. In the last few days I have been unable to move messages, and when I touch the icon it says ‘move this message to a new mailbox’. I do not want to move messages to a new mailbox, I just want the icon to do what it did before. I don’t understand what has changed. Can anyone help?

Hey Iwantapoodle,

We'd be happy to help you out with moving emails to another folder within your mail account.

Sounds like there might be some confusion here regarding the terminology being used. A mailbox is a folder that you can use to organize your email. When you tap the folder icon it'll say "Move this message to a new mailbox" then list all the folders or mailboxes for that account. Is that not what you're seeing?

Go to your Inbox in Mail.
Tap Edit in the upper-right corner.
Select the email messages, then tap Move.
Choose a mailbox to move the email messages to."

Hey there, Iwantapoodle!

Make sure you have your email accounts correctly signed in in Settings > Mail > Accounts. It sounds like your accounts are not signed in. You may also need to re-enter your password.

Just to explain further, in the past when I opened an email and tapped the folder icon at the bottom of the screen I got a pop up box saying 'move message' that I could then tap to pick a folder and move the message to a folder within that account.

Recently that has stopped happening. Now when I tap the folder icon I get a message at the very top of the screen saying 'move this message to a new mailbox'. However, just under this in bold it has the name of a different email account and a list of folders in a different account NOT the one I am using. So, if I'm in my work email account it switches to my personal account and lists the folders in my personal account. I can't move a message to a different folder within the email account I was using, only to a different email account. It makes no sense.

At first I thought I had made a mistake and was in the wrong account. Then I thought I was losing my mind. Now I'm definately being driven bonkers.
