How do I use an app specific password

I am trying to buy a new iPad. I need an app specific password. However I have never had an app specific password for my old iPad. How do I get information on the new one when it says I need to enter what I never had to begin with?

How to generate an app-specific password

Sign in to appleid.apple.com.
In the Sign-In and Security section, select App-Specific Passwords.
Select Generate an app-specific password or select the Add button , then follow the steps on your screen.
Enter or paste the app-specific password into the password field of the app.

Thank you for helping me with the passcode problem ( at least a problem for me). I tried to put in an app specific passcode. I did add a passcode, but then it said that would be used for my Apple ID password. I didn’t want to replace that on all of my apps. Was that correct, or did I do something wrong ?

You are welcome. An app specific password only works for the app you created the app specific password for. It doesn't replace your Apple ID password anywhere else. You didn't do anything wrong.
