I cannot rename the Home folder in MacOS Monterey.

I for some reason do not have the option to rename my Home folder. I am the only administrator with privileges to do this. I migrated all data from my “pass-me-down” MB that my Mom gave me, which had setup for her. She was, and had the only account set as “admin”. This new Air she gave me for my upcoming semester in college. Solution please?

You did what? Those are two steps. Which one did you do?

Did you backup all settings and important information? That's good. Very good.

Did you change the Home folder name? That's bad. Very bad.

I just can’t change the Folder name before creating said new administrator account.

Do you didn't change any folder names?

I know how to do that part.

Which part?

this laptop is brand new.

You said you migrated another computer to this one. It's not new anymore. It is whatever the old one was.

I have the benefit of setting it up personally instead of by an Apple employee like I imagine the previous admin did on my backed up disc/account that the previous Os was migrated from.

Apple employees do not setup computers like that. This computer is a duplicate of whatever the old one had.

If you really want to start off fresh, follow these instructions: Use Disk Utility to erase a Mac with Apple silicon - Apple Support

If you continue trying to rename your home folder, you are going to have to reset the computer anyway. May as well do it in a more controlled situation.

I took your advice and have not attempted to rename any folders. The title of the question was about my inability to rename the home folder. This is the second step of renaming an account in the instructions I found here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201548

I’m going to see your link provided, and figure out what I can do from there. This will make sense sooner than later. I very much appreciate your aid.

Did you complete step 1, creating a new admin user from which to make the changes. It is very bad to change the home folder name or user name while logged into the user you are changing. They may have made it impossible.

But, I also agree with the above two people who suggest creating your own account. On a Mac the order of the accounts matters not at all. There is nothing special about the first account created.

Nor should you want to. That will totally ruin your day. And since this is Friday, it will also ruin your weekend and most of next week too.

You should have access to that admin account. Use it to create a new administrator account for yourself. Then log out of the original admin account and use only your new administrator account.

Thank you so much! That is very helpful. I was following instructions on how to change the admin account name, and the instructions from Apple say to first change the Home folder name after backing up all settings/important info. Which I did. I just can’t change the Folder name before creating said new administrator account. I know how to do that part. Thank you again for your help!

I think I only want my ho e folder available to my one admin account that I have personally renamed, because this laptop is brand new. I have the benefit of setting it up personally instead of by an Apple employee like I imagine the previous admin did on my backed up disc/account that the previous Os was migrated from.

I can't even get to that link due to today's security hysteria. But I know about that document. I think you are misreading it. You can't even start it until after you create a 2nd administrator account. You have to log out of the account and the log in to the new administrator account. Only then can you change the first account. But if you have already created a 2nd administrator account to your liking, why change the first one?

Furthermore, that first account is probably linked to your Mom and will give you all kinds of problems. Do you really want you Mom to have that kind of deep access to all of your e-mails, messages, photos, and other activity while you are at college? I strongly recommend a fresh start here. 😄

Indeed. I could not “rename” “Home” folder in “/User”. The word ‘rename’ was dark, unlike the rest of the light options. So currently, my computer is backing up from my latest backup from earlier today. Though I think there may have been a problem because during the setup, I was asked to grant admin. access to the user account “admin” (my mom’s previous handed down admin. account). I’ll be staring at a dark screen for four hours.
